Diversity Dialogues: Advancing Engagement, Empathy, & Empowerment

Diversity Dialogues: Advancing Engagement, Empathy, & Empowerment provides a 6-week interactive forum to encourage bravery in exploring the difficult conversations need related to diversity. Diversity Dialogues defines diversity as encompassing age, disability (acquired or developmental), race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, affectional preference, socioeconomic status, Indigenous heritage, national origin, gender identity, gender expression, size, and assigned sex at birth. There are many individual experiences of societal oppression related to any of these identities. Facing, understanding, empathizing, and acting against oppression requires a level of bravery that many people lack. Diversity Dialogues provides language, resources, education, and Legacy facilitator guided safety to help individuals engage in these difficult conversations and gain the courage to act. Within the virtual weekly process group (as well as between session activities) all participants, regardless of background will

  • Explore their own cultural, ethnic, and/or social group identities
  • Clarify the intersection of their multiple identities and the ways in which they interact with the world
  • Explore the ways in which personally held values and implicit bias can collide
  • Learn about historical context related to discrimination, past and present, and the influence on the current sociopolitical realities
  • Discover ways to talk about and explore difference without causing offense
  • Explore the development of cultural humility and its role in one’s ability to develop empathy and relationship
  • Clarify and move forward with a personal plan for ongoing personal learning and growth
  • Clarify the meaning of social justice advocacy and identify a plan for personal social justice engagement.

Legacy instructional staff will provide weekly synchronous (live) facilitation of the course, as well as provide guidance in using the between-session online platform.
